Scoutmaster’s Corner
Greetings to all Scouts and Families of Scouts.
February is going to be a very busy month for our troop.
Reports I have received indicate that the Lunar Parade was a big
success and our troop was well represented.
Many thanks to Corky for organizing this event.
Feb 8th is
Scout Sunday. I encourage
all our Scouts to participate in this event.
We’ll be going to St Bernadine’s Church (
Valley Circle
) on Sunday.
The service is approximately an hour and we could eat after.
Remember, the last law of Scouting is that a Scout is reverent.
As Scouts, let’s practice this law Feb 8th.
Feb 27th
is snowboarding/skiing time. The
place is confirmed and we will have a great condo just 100 yards from
the lift on Snow Summit at Big Bear.
I am hoping that all will sign up.
Please see me (I am the tour leader) for details.
March will be our
camping trip and I have also been informed by Karen that we will
possibly have new Scouts to take with us on the outing.
As our older Scouts leave new ones will replace them.
This is the way it should be.
That’s it for now.
Come to the meetings and outings – and enjoy Scouting.
Yours in Scouting,
Alex Balian, Scoutmaster

Summer Camp 2004
– As earlier announced, it will be at
Camp
Whitsett
. See
me ASAP to sign up. I
had to remit the initial $75 per Scout on 2/1.
Estimated cost is $260-$280.
Camp will be
6/27/04
– 7/3/04.
Please, please, please see me ASAP (with your initial $75
deposit) if your Scout is interested.
Money – In order to better keep track of who is going on which outing and
who has paid (remember the pay 10 days in advance rule), please pay with
checks whenever possible and note the outing and the scout on the check.
On a similar note, when you submit expenses, please put your name
and the associated outing on the receipt.
As a reminder, although I try to attend the Wednesday meetings, I
don’t stay until the end. So,
your best bet is to see me at the beginning of the meeting or mail items
to me.
Court of Honor – Please note
that in March we will be having our next Court of Honor.
All families should attend; these events are to honor the Scouts
and their achievements.

The next Silhouette fundraiser is just around the corner!
Feb 14 and 15 are the days, and I currently have signed up:
Jared W, Bryce W, Evan C, Kyle B, Landen S, Patrick W, Derek W,
Jeremy C, and Joey M. We
have brand new rifles to shoot, and we can now have a great competition
all using the new stainless Savage Arms bolt action rifles.
With this many kids, we should have ample time to sight in the
new rifles and still have our competition, too.
Anybody else want to go? See
me.

HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR!
Well, I want to say thank you to the sixteen uniformed Scouts who
gave up their time to come out and spend Saturday, January 31st
with me in
Hollywood
at the KSCI 3rd Annual Lunar
New Year Parade. I also want
to thank Assistant Scout Masters
Karen Osterheldt
, Judy Osborne and Eric Cloud for all of
their help as we all marched and had a blast becoming celebrities for the
day!
The boys who attended were Jake B, Jeremy C, Evan C, Orion F, James
M, Ben N, Ian O, Ryan O, Chris O, Steven R, Landen S, Blake S, Ethan V,
Derek W, Patrick W, and Jared W. In
addition, also attending were Derek and Patrick’s mom, Helen; Jake’s
dad, Charlie; Orion’s dad, Isaiah; James’ dad, Jim; and Ethan’s mom,
Krystyna and her friend. They
were all very welcome and very helpful as they joined us for all of the
fun.

Website –
Well, at long last the Troop’s website is once again working.
The address is www.troop464.com (The private
pages are not yet up but everything else should be accessible to
everyone.) I would like to
get input from the SPL, ASPL, and all the PL to put on the website –
something about the Troop or your Patrol would be fine.
It doesn’t have to be a novel; a short paragraph is great.
As soon as I get the information on the weekly meetings the
website will be updated so please check the calendar page often.

The Scouts and their
parents and leaders must have given out more than 1,000 balloons before,
during and after the parade. Every
time a balloon was given out, you would see a smile on the receiver’s
face whether it be a young child, a teenager or an adult.
The
majority of the Scouts marched in the parade holding banners to lead the
parade and end the parade plus another banner in the middle of the
parade. The Scouts were
waving and yelling greetings to the crowd.
Patrick W was lucky as he got to march in the parade with a
monkey; AFTER ALL, IT IS THE ASIAN YEAR OF THE MONKEY!
That monkey seemed pretty
happy until a few thousand fire crackers went off and frightened him and
everyone around him.
The Scouts and ASMs who led the parade walked back
and joined the remainder of the Scouts and ASMs as they ended up the
parade by walking it again. That
final banner was followed by a giant dragon who, from time to time, ran
around us, encircling us in its beautiful reds and yellows and other
wonderful colors while the sounds of the drums and music accompanied us
as we marched west on Hollywood Boulevard from Vermont to Harvard.
The day was just perfect, though a bit windy.
Former
SPL Blake Straus was dressed as Hello
Kitty’s boyfriend, Dear
Daniel and he rode the parade route in costume on the back of a
bright red 1956 Thunderbird Convertible.
Blake said there were only three problems with being Dear
Daniel. The problems
were the wind almost pulling his costume head (not to mention his real
head with it) off, how hot it was inside of that head and the kids that
came up to him and wanted his autograph.
The gloves that he had to wear as Dear
Daniel made it very difficult to grip the pen to sign autographs.
There was a lot of food, drinks and souvenirs to be had
and the terrific atmosphere consisting of thousands of spectators, loud
music and the excitement of being in a parade made the day that lasted
from
8 AM
until close to
5 PM
seem to go by faster then it really did.
If you want to see the parade or if you want to relive the good
times you had at the parade, KSCI,
Channel 18, will broadcast it on February 8 at
5
PM
.
Thanks again for joining the parade, some of you for the second
year in a row. Each of the
Scouts will receive service credit for the hours that they worked and
this credit will help them in their advancement of rank.
KSCI said they have a special “Goodie Bag” similar to the one
they gave out last year for everyone in uniform who worked this year’s
festivities and that will be given out at the
Troop 464
March Court of Honor.
So, make sure you and your family is there.
